Santa Barbara Proposal at Butterfly Beach

We remember the day Shayna told us she had been “talking” with Andrew. She smiled as she explained the way he pursued her and his incredible thoughtfulness, and oh how we loved watching them fall for each other. Shayna is such a catch! She is absolutely gorgeous, such a babe, and full of life and joy and so much fun! She lights up every room she walks into, and from the second you meet her you want to be her best friend! Andrew is a champion! He is handsome and thoughtful, a hard worker and oh so romantic! There were multiple times we thought he was going to propose in the last few months like when he surprised her on Valentine’s weekend with her bags packed and a flight to NYC with him! Oh so dreamy, and yet it wasn’t for show, it was simply because he loves Shayna and he goes all out, all the time. So when it came time for the Santa Barbara Proposal at Butterfly Beach, we knew it was going to be nothing short of spectacular.

James and Andrew met up to talk about photography, and secretly started planning the proposal. The day before, everything was ready to go, and Shayna had no idea! And we mean, zero clue! She even said the night beforehand, in a slightly annoyed tone “why don’t you just propose tomorrow.” She had moved her whole life up here to Santa Barbara for him, and she was so ready for this next season. Andrew responded, knowing what the next day had in store, but knowing it had to remind a secret, that it wouldn’t happen till June or July. Little did she know her family was secretly flying in from Oregon, their friends who were doing the PCT trail left halfway through, and Andrew’s family and a dozen of their friends were coming for the proposal as well. Oh how we love surprises!

The next morning, Andrew gave her a card that read “Today is a very important day! Today is a day that we have been looking forward to for a loooong time. Today is a day that marks a new chapter in our beautiful love story.” And the wonderful thing about Andrew is, he doesn’t half ass anything. He does everything to the fullest, so he had the day planned perfectly! He planned for Shayna and her girlfriends to spend the day together on an “Andrew Sponsored” shopping spree at her favorite store which is where they bought the gorgeous red Free People dress (swoon worthy, we know), followed by hair and nail appointments, so she could look her best! And while all that was happening, Andrew and a dozen friends set up the proposal at Butterfly Beach. Then when everything was ready the girls dropped her off.

We were hiding in our car (thank the Lord for tinted windows) and as we watched her get out of the car she looked so BEAUTIFUL Jess started crying right away!! At the top of the stairs were roses and peonies and a golden birdcage with a note for her. Andrew was already there waiting for her and as soon as she got to the bottom of the stairs she started running toward her love!

At this point we got out of our car and followed behind her, while ducking and hiding behind things, you know, like ninjas would! After they embraced, and wiped a few tears, they sat down on the blanket and he gave her a book of photos of them throughout the time they’ve been dating. Then he gave her a bible that said “Shayna Stoker” (her soon to be last name) as well as a note. The note spoke off all the ways they have grown and changed and helped each other become better together, and at the end of the note it read, “We’ve had an amazing journey together so far, and now I think we are ready to take the next step in our story, Shayna Youngs, will you marry me?!” Oh what a beautiful moment as complete joy lit up her face and SHE SAID YES!! Then he turned her face toward the hill where their friends were cheering congrats, and then he pointed out her parents in the crowd, and oh my, she lost it. She had just seen her parents the weekend before for graduation so she was not expecting them to come down from Oregon a second weekend in a row! Andrew just held her as she cried the happiest tears of joy! Then Andrew turned and pointed to US! Shayna once again was shocked and excited and oh those tears flowed as Andrew had the biggest smile on his face! Everyone ran to congratulate, and our favorite part was watching Andrew and Shayna’s parents hold hands and run toward them, it felt like a fairytale! We have seen a lot of proposals, but this one is by far the most elaborate, and so true to who they are as couple. It brings happy tears to our eyes as we realize these two waited for the one who would pursue without relent, and love them by going above and beyond in every way!
