How To Book Destination Weddings

Filed in: Education

Ever scrolled through instagram and wondered how some of these photographers get booked for destination weddings? Have you ever dreamed of traveling the world to photograph weddings, but have never actually photographed a destination wedding before?

It often takes at least one destination wedding to lead into another opportunity for a destination wedding, but sometimes it can feel challenging to book that first one. Am I right?

Well if you’re wondering how to get started, we’ve got some helpful (and tested) advice for you.

Here are the four P’s for booking destination weddings.

Perception that you are a destination wedding photographer

You have to be perceived as a destination photographer before people will consider hiring you as one. That means posting photos of you…ahem, traveling to DESTINATIONS!

That’s right. Perception matters.

So, travel to different places. Post photos of yourself in those places. Having trouble booking your first destination wedding? No problem! Just schedule a styled shoot of your friend in your favorite destination.

Do whatever it takes.

When people consistently see you showing up at different locations, they’ll begin to associate you with destination photography. Then you’ll have one foot in the door on your way to booking your first destination wedding. But it doesn’t stop there.

Proof that you are a destination wedding photographer

You have to have social proof to back your reputation as a destination photographer. Perception is not enough. People throw down a lot of money for destination weddings, and they’re going to want to make sure you have what it takes to make theirs memorable.

How do you do this?

Get out there and shoot some destinations! Book any destination opportunity you can get, even if it doesn’t pay enough. Pay out of your own pocket if you have to. Then post those destination photos again and again. Once you book your first destination wedding, share reviews, testimonials, and pull-quotes from satisfied customers.

People matter the most

You have to know the right people and get into those circles with them. No one is going to book you if they don’t like you. So HAVE FUN! Engage with the types of clients you’d love to work with. Establish connections everywhere you go by being more interested in others then you are in yourself. Give value to the people you meet.

One way to get started is by meeting like minded photographers and establishing a networking base. You can do this at our new photo conference that we’re launching this year:

Persistence in important

You have to be persistent and know that eventually the compound effect will kick in.

Don’t. Give. Up.

Destination weddings don’t happen overnight. They happen by doing the first three steps over and over and over. It took us ten years! The question is, do you really want this? Well, it’s going to take persistence.

So keep going!

And this is how you get to travel for weddings.

The good news is that after consistently practicing these fundamentals, you’ll start to see momentum.

And that, my friends, is where it starts getting really fun!
